This parking lot has its own parking lot

File this under nonsensical things: the picture below shows a parking structure with a separate parking lot out front. It’s designed like a suburban strip mall, with parking in the front of the building, except that instead of a real destination the building is just more parking.


I imagine this situation arose because different buildings’ users refused to share parking, or for some reason couldn’t share, or for some other needless reason. Maybe these two lots were built in anticipation of demand that never materialized.

Either way though, this is terrible design.

It’s also spots like these that make Salt Lake City feel simultaneous small, but also too sprawling to walk in. And it’s significant that neither of these two lots — surface and structure — were particularly full in the middle of a business day when I took this picture.
