Here’s one way to prioritize bike traffic
I saw the intersection in the picture below during a recent visit to Durham, England.
Obviously, this type of intersection gives bikers priority over other kinds of traffic (i.e. cars). And though there are no bikes in this picture, I did actually see these intersections (they were in other cities as well) getting a fair amount of use.
This is not an expensive or difficult idea to implement. But it means making a conscious choice to get bikes out of the gutters and shoulders and to give them a proper place on the road. That’s a choice we seem to have trouble making out in the still too-car-centric West. Hopefully, that’s changing.
